What is a Tag?

MediaNotes allows you to efficiently analyze recorded performances such as mock negotations, legal depositions and sales presentations. A key component to this type of analysis is the use of tags.

Events

What is a tag? To understand tags you need to first understand what an event is in MediaNotes. An event is simply a segment of a video file that has a start and end time. For example, if we have a video file that is 2:30 we could create an event that starts at 0:10 and went to 0:29. An event can be 3 seconds or 3 minutes. It doesn't really matter. The key concept is that we are defining a segment of the video as an event.

Tags

Once we have created an event we now want to describe that event. In MediaNotes we describe events to analyze the performance in a video. This is where tags come into play. A tag is a lot like a category. When we tag an event we are describing it. By using a set of tags when analyzing a video we can focus our analysis. Let's look at an example.

We are going to be reviewing a mock negotiation. There are a specific list of skills that the negotiator should exhibit during this exercise. They should:

  • Identify interests
  • Analyze options
  • Promote effective communication

Since these are the skills we want our student to demonstrate we will create a tag for each skill. We might also create additional tags such as "Effective and "Not effective".

When we are analyzing the negotiation we can create events where the negotiator is exhibiting these skills. Then as we tag them up we can describe those events. We might tag a single event with "Identify interests" and "Effective". This is extremely powerful as we start to analyze the performance. We can instantly see how many events have been described with the different tags. It also helps us focus our review of the performance producing clearer feedback for the student.

Comments

MediaNotes does allow you to add comments to an event. The key difference between tags and comments is that comments are more specific to the event. For example, we might write a comment that says "You don't seem to be aware that the other party is uncomfortable with your solution here." That is very specific to the event. Tags are usually a bit more general and can be used on several events.
